What it is
Chiang Mai Zoo sits at the foot of Doi Suthep, on the same road that leads up to the mountain temple, and covers a large, hilly, well-forested site. That setting gives it noticeably more shade and natural terrain than a typical flat city zoo, though it also means some sections involve a fair amount of walking uphill and down.
What's inside
The zoo houses a wide range of animals across large enclosures, with big cats, giraffes and a variety of Southeast Asian species typically among the highlights. Given the site's size, many visitors use the internal tram or shuttle service to cover ground between the more spread-out sections rather than walking the whole route.
Getting there
The zoo is on the lower slopes of Doi Suthep, reachable by songthaew, taxi or ride-hailing app from the city centre, and it's easy to combine with a wider half-day trip up the mountain toward Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, since both sit on the same road.
Practical tips
- Wear comfortable shoes — the terrain is genuinely hilly in parts.
- Go earlier in the day to avoid the heat of the midday sun on the more exposed sections.
- Bring water, though there are food and drink stalls throughout the grounds.
