The short version

Doi Suthep and its neighbouring peak Doi Pui form Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, the forested mountain range that dominates Chiang Mai's western skyline. Most visitors come specifically for Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (see our dedicated temple guide), but the road continues well beyond the temple into genuinely different terrain.

Bhubing Palace

Further up the mountain, Bhubing Palace is a royal winter residence with public flower gardens, open to visitors when the royal family isn't in residence. The cooler mountain air and manicured gardens make it a popular add-on to a temple visit, particularly in the cool season when the flowers are at their best.

Hmong hill-tribe village (Doi Pui)

Continuing on, a Hmong village welcomes visitors with a small market and a glimpse of hill-tribe life, though it's worth going in with realistic expectations — it's a well-established tourist stop rather than an untouched village, and treating the community and its residents respectfully matters more here than almost anywhere else on a typical Chiang Mai itinerary.

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park

Beyond the built attractions, the national park has hiking trails, waterfalls and viewpoints for anyone wanting to spend a full day on the mountain rather than a quick temple visit. Trail conditions and access vary seasonally, so check current status before planning a hike.

Good to know

Plan a half-day minimum if you want to combine the temple with Bhubing Palace and the Hmong village — it's a winding mountain road between each stop, not a quick hop.
