Chiang Mai University, one of Thailand's most respected public universities, anchors a large area on the western side of the city, bordering Nimman and stretching toward the base of Doi Suthep. The university's own park — Ang Kaew Reservoir and its surrounding grounds — is a popular spot for a quiet walk, jogging, or simply escaping the city heat under the campus's substantial tree cover.
What the area is like
Expect a genuinely different rhythm from the tourist-oriented parts of the city — student cafés, budget-friendly food stalls aimed at a local student budget rather than visitor prices, and a mix of guesthouses and budget hotels that cater as much to visiting parents and university guests as to tourists. It blends into Nimman at its eastern edge without a hard line between the two.
Why visitors end up here
Beyond the campus itself, this area is the natural route toward both Wat Umong and Wat Suan Dok, and further on toward Doi Suthep and the zoo — many visitors pass through without necessarily stopping, though the campus park and student food scene are worth a dedicated visit in their own right.
Staying near the university
Budget and mid-range hotels here tend to offer good value, benefiting from student-driven pricing in the surrounding area while still being a reasonable ride from the Old City. It suits visitors prioritising cost and a quieter, more local feel over Nimman's polish or the Old City's postcard convenience.
